Affiliate programs (also known as "referral", "associate" or "partner" programs or affiliate marketing) is an online advertising mechanism that enables advertisers (mostly commercial site owners) to offer monetary rewards to their affiliates (that's you) for driving traffic to their sites.
If you don't have a product of your own to sell, you can join affiliate programs to bring in additional revenue to your site.
Let's say your site is about making jewelry and you offer tips and techniques on various ways to make jewelry. You would join affiliate programs from bead or jewelry supply companies and refer your visitors to their products from your own website.
Any time a referral from your site results in a sale, the company will pay you a commission for any product sold as a result of your site's recommendation.
How Do Affiliate Programs Work?
Here's how an affiliate program works, using Clickbank as the example...
The affiliate provides links from his/her site to certain e-books on the author’s site, books that are related to the affiliate's site content. Clickbank uses special software that tracks who sends each visitor. If and when the visitor buys, Clickbank pays the affiliate a commission.
The affiliate never has to...
write a book
process an order
ship a book
answer customer support e-mails.
And the same applies to any product that is sold in this way... IPods, travel, cameras, beads, software programs, etc.
That, in essence, is the beauty of the affiliate concept. You can be up andbuilding an online business in record time, at minimal risk. Top-notch merchants supply everything (i.e., excellent products, ordering, credit card processing, and delivery). All you need to do is to put yourself in the path between customers and quality merchants... and earn a commission for your efforts.
Affiliate Marketing - A Great Way To Monetize Your Web Site
Getting Started
The revenue from affiliate programs is one of the most effortless ways to earn money from your site. You merely have to put a few banners here and there and wait for the money to roll in.
Well, okay, not quite. You will still need to have some visitors first before you can make anything, and of course once they come to your site you have to get the click.
So how do you get your customers to click on your affiliate banners, buttons or text links?
Follow the natural, proven CONTENT TRAFFIC PRESELL MONETIZE process…
Recognize the fundamental reality of how people use the Web. Eliminate offline thinking of “location, location, location.” Online, people search for solutions through “information, information, information” (i.e., Content). So plan to build a tightly-niched Theme-Based Content Site.
Do the critical up-front thinking and planning...
develop the best site concept/theme, based on what you know and love…
perhaps a hobby or past work experience can be your springboard.
brainstorm the most profitable topics related to your theme.
select the best related affiliate programs.
Then put yourself into the click path of your visitors. Achieve this by delivering customer-focused Content (i.e., information that meets theneeds/wishes of your target group).
Traffic is Everything
No visitors, no money. To have people clicking on your banners or text links and taking up the offers given there, you need to work on the traffic going through your site. There's no substitute for this. No amount of fine-tuning of your advertisements is going to help you if you have only a few visitors going to your site each day.
The only way to get targeted Traffic is by building pages that please the Search Engines and rank highly on a search results page. The higher the ranking, the easier it is for interested and targeted traffic to find you. More traffic means more potential sales, which means more potential commissions for you.
Remember that not every visitor is going to click on your banner. (When was the last time you clicked on a banner on another site?) So to earn any income at all, you must generate enough traffic.
Content is King
There are many sites whose owner obviously decided that they'll make a quick buck by loading up their site with affiliate program links. Their site contains nothing but advertising links, along with comments that these are "fantastic offers", "great offers", "best" and whatnot. I'm sure you've seen those sites while searching for information.
If your site is like this, you should be aware that aggressive promotion may get you many visitors, but those visitors are unlikely to bookmark your site and return for more. There will be some (if not more) that will be so fed up that they won't even look at what you have to say. My suggestion - your website must have genuine information that they are searching for.
The Power Of PREselling
PREselling (i.e., “warming up” your visitors) through valuable content establishes credibility. Once you have that, your recommendations carry more weight. The difference in Conversion Rates between visitors who arrive PREsold to your merchant’s site via an in-context text link vs. a banner can be as high as 20-fold.
It depends on a few factors, like your site's theme, how much traffic your website brings, how many affiliate programs are there for your site's niche, etc.
It's very common for people in the affiliate business to make between a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per month.
Naturally, the top 5%, who are called “Super Affiliates”, make much more and some of them make as much as $150,000+ per year.Successful affiliate marketers truly believe in and use the C T P M process:
Create searched-for content (the “C”) that pulls in targeted traffic (the “T”). Warm up (i.e., PREsell) your visitors so that they click on your recommendations with an open-to-buy attitude (the “P”). And then generate income through those PREsold visitors (i.e., monetize) using the low-risk affiliate model -- as a primary source of income (if you have no product or service of your own to sell) or as a profitable secondary source (the “M”).
Is this process difficult?
Not at all! But do keep in mind that this is not a “get-rich-quick” scheme. Youneed to bring effort and passion to the table. After all, you are building morethan a website. You are building a real business!
C T P M works, if you work it!
Make this your affiliate business mantra and you will succeed!
Some advertisers tell you that you should personally recommend their products, and if you do so, the advertising link will do much better.
This is true. But unless you yourself have used their product or service, and also agree that it is what YOU claim it to be, putting such a link can be counterproductive. There is a relationship of trust between you and your visitors. People start off generally believing what you say until you demonstrate that you're just a salesperson trying to make a quick buck.
My recommendation is that if you don't really know much about a product, or have not tried it, do not pretend otherwise. Of course if you're using it yourself and think the world of it, by all means, recommend it. Or if you would like to promote a product on your site then purchase it, try it out and see if it has all the benefits the advertisers claim that it has, also take note of how fast you received it or how their customer service performed.
Basically, just be honest. Believe it or not, honesty is the best business policy.
Here is a real life example:
I am an affiliate with SiteSell and I promote one of their products called Site Build It! (SBI!). As a matter of fact I built this website using Site Build It!, so I am very familiar with the product, I know it works and I am extremely happy with it.
Therefore, I can honestly say that I am proud to recommend it to ANYONE who wants to build a successful website, especially if you have no idea on HOW to build one. SBI! provides all the tools and teaches you step-by-step not only on HOW to build it, but they also guide you on how to make money from it! Click here to see 85 Reasons Why I Love SBI!
You can join jewelry affiliate programs by going directly to an affiliate link. For example, if you are surfing the internet and happen to come across a product that a particular site is promoting and you feel that you too would like to promote it then click on the affiliate link.
This will take you to the product page, scroll down to the very bottom of the page and you will find a link that says Affiliate Program or Become an Affiliate or it may just say Affiliates. When you click on that link it will take you to their affiliate page and supply you with all the info about their program and how to join.
Affiliate Networks
Affiliate networks are large online advertising companies that provide aggregation and tracking services to both affiliates and merchants.
From an affiliate point of view, a network is a huge marketplace or directory, where you can easily find a large number of opportunities under any possible topic (like business, travel, education, hobbies, finance, entertainment and countless of other topical categories).
The networks provide three major advantages to affiliates:
Easy access to a huge number of affiliate programs in your desired niche (no need to spend a lot of time searching for them).Since everything is tracked and monitored by a reputable third party company (the affiliate network), the odds for not receiving your commission are extremely low.You can promote several programs from one network and get paid for the revenues of all of them by one unified payment source, through one check. Fewer payment sources – less hassle. Here are just a few of many Affiliate Networks that you may want to explore to see if they have any products that would fit well with your niche:
