Clasp designs to balance heavy necklaces

by Jan O

I am looking for tips on hand-made clasps or other techniques that can help relieve the weight of a heavy necklace. What are the tactics that other people use so that the clasp doesn't feel as if it is digging into the neck of the wearer?

In the example shown, the combination of the bone beads and pendent are quite heavy. The clasp is made with 18 gauge sterling silver, but I worry that the full weight of the necklace is right at the back of the neck and the clasp may feel as if it is digging in.
Thanks, Jan

Try looking for various clasps online. The clasp may not need to be handmade.

Use light-weight spacer beads between heavier beads.

Your best bet would be to use a toggle clasp. You can easil make them yourself or purchase them.the heavier look of the clasp would also balance out the look of your design.
