Step 1
Make a Jewelry Website
that Maximizes Profits

The first step in the planning phase to make a jewelry website is to understand the C  T  P  M process. Know how and why PREselling, not selling, and the difference between them, is what maximizes profits.

Having a successful website is also knowing the difference between offline and online strategies in getting traffic. This means replacing that well-known offline strategy of "location, location, location" with "Information, information, information."

In the offline world, traffic is relatively easy to achieve -- it's all about "location, location, location." An attractive, nicely merchandised store in a mall or on a high-traffic shopping street usually means instant traffic -- and sales, of course!

However, in the online world, no one just happens to walk past, see your business and enter your Web site. Surfers on the Net are not looking for you or your business. People search for information, for solutions. After all, if they knew you existed, they would not be searching. They would already be customers.

Online, you must generate your own traffic to be successful. Therefore, your primary task, well before you make your first sale to a customer (often well before that person is even aware that s/he is shopping!), is to provide the information that people are searching for, in a way that Search Engines like.

Information is what surfers want.

Why Do You Need to PreSell?

You have to get your viewers to like you, to trust you, to believe in you, and to look up to you as an authority in your niche. If you decide to make a jewelry website focused on the style of jewelry you make, then you also need to inform your visitors on what’s involved in designing, making and creating your pieces and about the different types of materials used.

At first you are going to say “well, if I tell all my visitors “how” to make the same style of jewelry then they won’t need to buy it, they can make it themselves”. That is true for those that do make their own jewelry, but not everyone is creative or have the time to learn how to, and many would rather just buy jewelry than make it.

How many craft shows have you exhibited in where people come to your booth and examine your pieces intensely then walk away. You know they are giving it a good look over to get some ideas. We all do! That is where we get inspiration to come up with some new ideas. That doesn’t mean that we are going to copy exactly what we saw, but to just get an idea of how it was made and then put our own twist on it.

On this website I show you many examples of different people’s jewelry, I don’t show them for anyone to copy, but for examples, to get ideas and to get inspiration. (as well as to show off different jewelry designers’ creativity)

Yes, you will get a lot of traffic from people who want to learn, and you can make money from those people as well with google adsense, affiliate marketing and maybe even your own how-to ebook or tutorials (which I will explain how in detail here).

You will have a much better chance of selling your finished pieces to those who prefer to purchase jewelry than make it themselves once they read what goes into making a piece, what inspired you to make it, and information on the materials that are used. After they visit your site they will feel connected to you and understand the process and techniques you use to make your wearable art. They will trust you and know that your work is unique and of quality. And then buy from you. And that is what preselling is all about.

How Do You Get People to Come to Your Site?

In order to thrive and be profitable you must get people to come to your site (traffic). And how do you get people to come to your site? By providing the information (i.e., content) that people are searching for, in a way that Search Engines like. In other words...

Give them what they want.

A Theme-Based Content Site contains information based upon a main subject. Each page focuses upon a single topic that is related to that theme. The net sum of all the information on all your pages forms the Content of your site.

For example, lets say you specialize in making jewelry with polymer clay. That would be your theme or site concept -- what you specialize in, what you have a lot of knowledge about or a passion for. So now you would write different pages or articles about polymer clay, such as: what is polymer clay and the different brands, how to condition it, different tools to use, different techniques on blending, shaping and creating faux stone, wood, bone, glass, metal, etc., making canes, image transfers, using rubber stamps, antiquing and crackling, gilding, glazing, sculpting, how to make beads, pendants, jewelry components, etc. Everything you know about making jewelry with polymer clay. Each of those pages or articles all together form the Content of your site.

These specific "topical pages" are called "Keyword-Focused Content Pages." They rank well with the Search Engines (SEs), attracting lots of targeted Traffic.

Search Engines are generated by small computer programs called spiders. They roam the Web at high speed and return billions of Web pages into an engine's database. Since no HUMAN actually RATES each page, the engines develop "ranking algorithms" to decide how high to rank each page for each keyword search.

The three major Search Engines are Google, Yahoo! Search and Bing. Other engines are either of minor importance, or use one or more of the above three.

The high-value content "warms up" (i.e., PREsells) visitors by OVERdelivering what they came for... information.

Visitors start to like and trust you (based on what you write about on your site). Your content-rich site builds trust and credibility... "PREselling!" The visitor begins to like and respect you... you are a knowledgeable expert.

This credibility creates an open-to-buy or open-to-hire mindset. You are now a mere click away from Monetizing (converting PREsold traffic into dollars).

Contrast that to a visitor who arrives at a sales site... no inspiring, relevant, editorial content. Selling merely tries to get the sale. If you do not have a brand (and most of us do not), if you have not built a relationship with your visitor, your chances of selling are near-zero.

Why? Well, which person would YOU respond to? A stranger with a sales pitch or a knowledgeable friend/expert making a recommendation? Become that knowledgeable friend/expert.

Great content encourages your visitor to think about you as a "friend/expert" rather than a stranger. And if you create a truly info-rich site, you'll actually become a trusted expert, sharing your wealth of information. You basically create your own brand... you and your creativity.

People "buy" from those they know and like. They resist sales efforts from everyone else.

And that is why 99% of small businesses fail online.

Selling is not your site's first priority. (In fact, you may decide not to sell anything and become an "infopreneur" instead!) Your #1 priority is to PREsell through the delivery of the information that visitors seek.

You "monetize" later.

Effective PREselling creates an open-to-buy (or open-to-hire) frame of mind in your visitors and "gets the click" to your income-generating source (whatever your monetization models may be). That is what produces high Conversion Rates, (the percentage of visitors who convert into dollars) and generates more income for you.

Monetization is the act of converting PREsold traffic into money. It usually involves a click. The Conversion Rate is the percentage of your visitors who deliver the click in question. If 100 visitors visit a page selling your jewelry piece, and one person clicks to buy, that page has a Conversion Rate of 1%.

The needs of your target group must be your #1 priority, the reason behind every action you take. Your desire to earn income always comes second. Paradoxically, by doing that your income soars.

Make a Jewelry Website With Lots of Content

By making a Theme-Based Content Site, you will be growing your clientele (i.e., targeted traffic) from the ground up. Owning your traffic is essential to your longevity on the Net because…

If you don’t own your traffic, you don’t own your business.

An effective Theme-Based Content Site will be searched-and-found byprospective customers -- a number that will increase steadily as your site gains in reputation and relevance at the Search Engines. Simply put, you will be building a site that works for you, not the other way around!

So how do you make a jewelry site that works? It all boils down to this do-able process…

  1. Develop a valuable product or service -- your own style of jewelry or special techniques that you use!
  2. Develop your own site in the niche that you know and love.
  3. Fill that site with high-value content.
  4. Use that content to attract your own niche-targeted traffic.
  5. Build trust and credibility with your visitors.
  6. Use content to PREsell your targeted visitors. And...
  7. Convert that PREsold, warm, willing-to-buy traffic into sales or commissions.
  8. Diversify your revenue plan to include other monetization options (ex.,Google’s AdSense, affiliate income, services, etc), all related to your site’stheme-based content. This diversification will help you grow a stable business that you own, one with true equity.

The process is simple, straightforward and easy once you shift your thinking to… “Information first… income generation, second.

The top 3% that succeed on the Net build targeted, interested traffic by providing the type of high value content that their visitors are searching for and that the Search Engines like.

These smart business owners PREsell (“warm up” their visitors) through excellent content about a profitable niche/theme related to the concept of their product or service (or the ones they represent). As a result, these PREsold visitors are more open to their sales offers and convert more quickly into enthusiastic customers.

The 98% that fail build a Web site to sell and somehow figure that traffic will just show up and that these visitors will be willing to buy immediately.

Wrong thinking… wrong process!

Moving Forward...

Now that you understand that before you can make money on your site you need to Presell. And of course before you can presell you need Traffic. And how do you get traffic? By supplying information information, information (great Keyword-Focused Content).

To succeed online, you must start where your "pre-customers" start...

People search for information, look for solutions. They are not looking for you. Give them what they want by converting your knowledge into high-quality, in-demand CONTENT.

Before you can do that, you must find the optimal niche for your website
