My website is not coming up on the first few Google pages

by Andy Soper

The Title says it all. My website is not coming up on the first few Google pages. I am getting hits but only a few (3-6) per day

I have registered with Google and it has crawled my site but still no significant business.

We make nice stuff (I think) and people who do see our stuff like it.

Perhaps my keywords are not the best?

Everyday Elegance

Hi Andy,

I just checked your site's page source and these are the keywords your are using for your site:
"the home of elegance, on-line Jewelry, "

If I am surfing the internet looking for handcrafted jewelry it would NEVER occur to me to type in “the home of elegance” and I am pretty sure that no one else will either. Even if people did know that your website existed they would probably type in “” to find you.

Choosing the right keywords for a website involves understanding the search habits of the general public. When building a website around a certain topic, it is important to consider how people would search for information about the topic.

Please read these articles to get a better understanding of keywords and how to find and use the right ones.

Just having the right keyword alone will not drive traffic to your site as you will be competing against 1000’s of other handcrafted jewelry sites to get noticed and ranked in the first few pages of Google results.

When someone types in a keyword or search term in Google’s search box, Google searches the entire web (consisting of over 100 million websites) to find the best sites for that keyword, and then ranks them accordingly in the search results.

How do you get the search engine to list your website in the first 10 to 30 results? The answer is simple: CONTENT. The more content or information you provide about a particular topic the better your site will be ranked in the first 10 to 30 search engine results.

Please read the following articles to get a better understanding of how Google finds you and ranks your website:
How to Build a Jewelry Website
If you want to build a jewelry website, or presently have an unvisited site or blog that earns little or no income, then you are in the right place. This section describes the whole process to help you create a website with lots of content that will drive traffic to your site and make you money.

Besides having the right keywords and lots of informative and great content for your site, Google also ranks your site by how many inbound links you have. Having inbound links is also one of the main factors that major search engines take in account to rank your website in the search engine results. So you must also work on “link building”.

Link Building is the process of creating inbound links to ones own website. This can be done by reciprocal links, being listed in e-zines, newsletters, directories, search engines, etc. Link building is one of the best ways to make your site popular. There are few types of linking one of which is reciprocal links.

Reciprocal links or link exchanges is the process where two webmasters agree to show the other's link on their website. After link building when the number of sites which link to a particular site is known as link popularity which helps in the search engine ranking of a website.

There are many advantages of link building.
    1. Link building helps in getting quality traffic from relevant sites which increases sales.

    2. Also when there will be high quality incoming links the site will also be seen as a valuable resource.

    3. Link building helps in creating awareness, visibility and credibility of your site.

    4. The site also obtains wider search engine exposure.
It also helps the website get indexed by search engines.

As well as “link exchanges” you can also get links to your site by joining in jewelry discussion forums (like you have done here). Remember that Forums are for sharing and discussing ideas or problems. They are not a place for you to give a “sales pitch”, if your comments sound like you are just trying to sell something then readers will most likely ignore it and probably not click on your link.

Photo Galleries are also a great way to get an inbound link. If anytime you see a “Jewelry Photo Gallery” inviting you to share some of your designs, then DO IT! Its an open invitation for you to get involved and show off your work. Be sure to describe how you made the piece, what materials you used and what inspired you to make it. Also tell a little something about YOU, readers are always interested in getting to know the designer a little better.

Again, DO NOT write a sales pitch! Just interesting info about the piece. Your link will be your sales route. If you describe the piece well and what went into making it, then if people are interested in purchasing any of your work or want to see more of what you have to offer they will follow your link. Be descriptive as possible!

Feel free to add a photo and description (along with your website link) to my Handcrafted Jewelry Photo Gallery

I hope all this information and articles are helpful to you in understanding how Google ranks your site.

Good luck and please keep me updated on how your Google ranking is doing.

Getting Ranked in Google Results
by: Chris

Thank you Gloria so much for sharing this info. I have had my website up for over six months and I too am only getting a couple of hits a day.

For sure I will read the articles that you recommended to get a better understanding of what Google wants in order to have my website ranked within the first 3 pages of Google results.

Thanks again, Chris

Dear Julia,

I totally agree that "the HOME of Elegance" is a totally unlikely keyword. However it is in my keyword list because I followed your "confused about .." advice to have a keyword describing the site that I could use on each page to point a link back to my main page. It is there for the bot's benefit and not for humans. There are other keywords more human friendly in my list.

Thank you for all your help.

Your Website
by: Gloria

Hi Andy,

I understand what you are saying about this keyword for your home page, but you must also remember that keywords are search terms that internet surfers type into Google's search box. Therefore, it may be a little while before you are found for "home of elegance" but you could be found for other keywords on other pages.

If you are hoping to be found by the search engines then you will need lots of pages with lots of content for your different keywords to be found.

There is a lot more to getting ranked in Google results besides keywords. Here is just a few of the hundred's of things the search engines look for when ranking a page:

Content: when surfers are looking for information they want to be able to provide some good content to keep both surfers and their advertisers (ie: adwords) happy.

Ease of Navigation: how easy is it to get from home page to tier 2 and tier 3 pages and back again.

Deep Linking: how easy is it to get from a tier 3 to another tier 3 or or tier 3 to tier 2. Every page on your site should have a least 3 links to it from other pages.

Link Popularity: they check to see how popular your website or page is by how many inbound links you have. (quality links from relevant sites). (This is why I recommended earlier to have a "Links" page on your site and perform link exchanges with other jewelry sites, and to join discussion forums, blogs and post photos in jewelry photo galleries, etc. (Social Media Networking)

Page views: they check to see how many pageviews per visitor you receive. The more page views means the more visitors are interested in your site. (This is why you need lots of pages)

Length of time on your site: the longer visitors stay on your site the more interesting your site must be.

Bounce rate: how many visitors come to your site and immediately click the back button to go back to the search engine. This is why your home page is SO IMPORTANT! It has to be inviting, it has to spark viewers interest to further investigate the other pages on your site.(and hopefully get them interested enough in your product to click on the "Buy Now" button)

Like I said, these are just some of the 100's of things search engines are looking for when ranking a page in their search results. They want to make sure they bring the surfer the best site with the most relevant information that they are searching for, if a site is popular then it must be interesting!

I hope this gives you a little better understanding that keywords are important but there is also more to it than that.

Page Views
by: Sheena

I have 20 pages on my site and according to my traffic stats my page views are still only 1.2 pageviews per visitor.

I read somewhere that your pageviews per visitor (PPV) should be around 5.

How many pages do I need to get a PPV of 5?

Hi Sheena,

Having a PPV of 5 would be excellent. But having a PVV of 3 or more is good.

It doesn't matter how many pages you have on your site, just as long as they supply what the visitor is looking for (content) and they find it interesting enough to check out more of your pages (and the more pages you have the more they can check out).

I have close to 400 pages on my site and last month I had 117,702 page views, and 36,582 visitors (117,702 divide 36,582 = 3.2) and my PPV averages around 3.2.

This doesn't necessarily mean that every visitor checks out 3.2 pages on my site. Some people come to my site realize that the topic of my site or the page they landed on isn't what they are looking for, so they click the back button and continue their search. (we all do it).

But then I get a lot of people who have found the information they are looking for, found it interesting and then checked out a lot of my other pages to see what else I have to offer. So it averages out to about 3.2 Pages Per Visitor.

If you don't have Google Analytics or your Web Host does not supply you with Traffic Stats then you can get a glimpse at how your site is doing with Alexa. Just type in your website, then click on the yellow "Get Details" button. You will see your traffic rank and how many sites linking into yours (Reputation). Click on the Traffic Stats tab (halfway down the page). Here you will see a blue bar across the page and you can click on Pageviews/User, Bounce %, Time on Site, etc.

This will give you a snapshot of how your site has been ranked for the last 3 months.
