My Website Success Story

I'm working at home and I'm lovin' it!

The following is my story on how this website has risen to rank not only in the top 1%, but the top 0.5% of over 100 million active websites online.

On my about me page, you will see that a couple of years ago I moved to a small community with a population of about 300 in a beautiful area of Ontario, Canada called Muskoka. I love it here!

I love living in the country. But, I still have a mortgage, car payments, and like everyone else, numerous bills to pay. After owning and managing retail stores for ten years I didn’t really want to go back into retail.

Although I loved having my own retail businesses, it was a lot of work. Not that I am afraid of “a lot of work”, to the contrary, I love keeping busy, but I hated the fact that retail stores have set hours and you have to be open 7 days a week. Just like any 9-5 job, you have to be there!

I wanted to work from home. I wanted to be able to set my own hours. I wanted to have more time to enjoy this beautiful country side and I wanted to have more time to be creative.

Having an entrepreneurial spirit, I figured I could work my business over the internet. Why not? I had been designing, teaching and selling crafts and jewelry for over 30 years at various craft shows and to different shops. I had two retail stores over the last ten years so I was pretty confident I had enough marketing and business savvy to take the plunge and create my own website.

But I had never built a website. I was great at surfing the web, using various graphic tools, but I had no knowledge of HTML or website design. I am a quick learner and felt that I could easily figure out how to create a web page, post photos of my jewelry along with a “Buy Now” button, and then wait for the money to come pouring in.

Boy, was I wrong! After six months I had only a couple of hits on my website and sold NOTHING! What was I doing wrong? I had always been successful selling to customers face to face, but selling over the internet was a whole new ball game.

“Word of mouth” had always been my best form of advertising and brought many new customers to my retail stores. But how do I get people to come to my website? I have beautiful jewelry and great design ideas, but how do I get the word out there? How do I get people to come and see it and fall in love with it and want to own it? I guess in the back of my mind I just figured it was like opening a retail store: “build it and they will come”. Boy, was I wrong! With a hundred million websites on the internet how do I get people to stop and explore and come to mine?

I had a great looking site with beautiful photos of my jewelry, but I finally realized that just having a great “looking” site wasn’t enough. In researching ways to drive more traffic to my website, I came across a company called SiteSell, and the first thing I learned was that:

Having a successful website is also knowing the difference between offline and online strategies in getting traffic. This means replacing that well-known offline strategy of "location, location, location" with "Information, information, information."

Information is what surfers want. And lots of it!

How the Internet works. You make money by providing content using a process is called C-T-P-M (Content, Traffic, Presell, Monetize)

  • First you build Content on subjects people are actually searching for. And you do it in such a way that it scores high in search engines like Google.
  • Content attracts Traffic to your site. People won't come to your site, unless they can find you through the search engines.
  • If you offer good information, they'll keep coming. And they'll come to know, trust and respect you. This is called "Preselling".
  • After gaining the website visitors trust and respect, you make Money by promoting other quality businesses through advertising and/or selling your own products. In fact,SBI teaches you many other ways to make money with your website

You can turn any hobby, passion or skill into a viable online business and choose a niche topic in an area of your interest or expertise.

I was still skeptical...

This sounded too good to be true. How could you make money without trying to sell a product or service? I thought this had to be another one of those "get rich quick" schemes.

... But I couldn't get it out of my mind.

I went back and watched the SBI! Video Tour, and again read through the various case studies and checked out a lot of those sites claiming to be in the top 1% of over 100 million sites on the world wide web. Everyone claimed that your site won’t be an over night success and that it would take some work to get it going. I wasn't worried about the work.  I knew I could apply myself if someone could just show me exactly how to do it.  And EVERYONE claimed that if you follow SBI!’s step-by-step process your website will succeed.

Finally I thought to my self, well it is only $300 a year and I have no idea how to even start to build a proper website. It would probably cost me more than that to take a course on how to build a website, and more than double to buy a web building software package like DreamWeaver (then I would have to take a course on how to use the software).

SBI! said this $300 a year would include everything I needed - web pages builders, form builders, an autoresponder so I could send out newsletters, and teach me how to actually get people to visit my site. They promised if I followed the instructions, I'd have a site in the top 1%-3% of all sites on the 'net. So I got out my credit card and went for it.

In retrospect the cost was nothing since it works out to about $25 a month.  I mean, what other business can you possibly think of that costs less than $30 a month in expenses?

It sure beats the $1800 for rent, plus stock, plus displays, plus labor, plus advertising, plus all the other expenses of running a retail store! Plus I would spend at least ten times that amount doing craft shows every other weekend. I still do a few craft shows now and then for extra income, but I don’t have to do them as often. I can now spend more time on being creative.

How Is My Site Doing?

Remember, my first non website had no traffic rank at all and only a couple of visitors in the 6 month period that I had it. In less than a year, Beading Design Jewelry (using SBI!) had risen to join the top 1% of all sites on the web. And I now receive over 50,000 visits a month and that number is continuously growing.

It's still hard for me to believe, but fewer than a 1/2% of over 100 million active websites online receive more traffic than this site right here.

How Did I Do It?

How is it possible for a website that's operated by a woman who had no HTML or web design experience and who works from a desk in her rec-room to achieve that kind of success?

I have to give much of the credit to the set of website tools I use.

SBI includes everything from website hosting to keyword brainstorming to search engine optimization and submission.

And its simple newsletter publishing tool and site syndication feed put my articles right in front of the people who are interested in reading them.

Having a comprehensive suite of tools all in one service means I don't to have to spend time (and money) pulling together a collection of software and services from different providers and figuring out how to get them to work together.

SBI does all the essential work for me behind the scenes. All I have to do is concentrate on research, writing, and building content rich pages! I still have to do the work, but I can leave all the technical stuff to SBI.

And concentrating on the content is the key to success! Less than three months after I first put Beading Design Jewelry online, about half of its pages began showing up in the top 10 search engine results for their keywords. I now have over 9000 keywords that land in the top 20 search results from the different major search engines.

This brings thousands of visitors per day who are searching for the exact information Beading Design Jewelry provides.
